At present, the Turkish photovoltaic industry has brought many opportunities, of which the market prospect of small-scale photovoltaic power plants is the brightest, because photovoltaic projects with installed capacity of less than 1MW do not require production licenses. Turkey’s renewable energy allows electricity consumers to offset electricity bills by installing photovoltaic systems. Commercial photovoltaic systems cost less than $2 per watt.
High-speed economic growth and surging energy demand have forced Turkey to rely heavily on imported conventional energy, especially natural gas and coal, which has become an important issue in energy security. At the same time, Turkey's energy consumption has increased by 8% annually over the past 10 years. This indicates that Turkey has become the third largest consumer of electricity in the Middle East. Therefore, the Turkish government is eager to explore the potential of renewable energy. Turkey’s current installed power generation capacity is about 70 GW, while the government plans to add another 110 GW to 2023. The goal is to distribute 90% of the electricity by natural gas, coal and renewable energy, with 30% each. The other 10% comes from nuclear energy. Currently, imported natural gas accounts for 40% of the country's power generation.
The Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources stated that the 2023 target includes at least 3 GW of solar photovoltaic power generation devices, but only equivalent to 1.66% of the total power generation. Compared with the country's total annual sunshine time of 2737 hours of 7.5 hours per day, it appears to be low.
